OpenAI aims to build an autonomous AI researcher capable of independent AI research by March 2028 — at which point AI progress becomes self-accelerating, leaving society far less time to adapt than most people think.
Sam Altman says the last time he felt this way was on a winter night in early 2020. OpenAI's researchers had sensed COVID before the rest of the world — they were staring at exponentially growing data, taping copper strips to doorknobs, getting mocked by the press. That evening he walked alone through San Francisco's Mission District, masked, watching people in restaurants and bars breathing into each other's faces. Why Release a "Superintelligence Blueprint" Now
OpenAI published a blueprint document on superintelligence the morning of the forum. Altman's rationale was straightforward: the pace of progress keeps accelerating, they believe extraordinarily powerful models are imminent, and this won't be a one-time event — it will unfold continuously over the next several years.
Researcher Adrien Ecoffet added a telling detail: during the months spent drafting the blueprint, a large number of researchers underwent a personal shift — from writing most of their own code to having AI write most of it. A Paradigm Shift in Safety Thinking: From "Containing One AI" to "Societal Immune System"
Altman argues that early AI safety thinking — what he calls "classical AI safety" — assumed there would be very few AIs in the world and that aligning them would be enough. Reality is more complex but ultimately more stable: there will be many AIs, and one company ensuring its own models behave is nowhere near sufficient.
He gave a concrete example from cybersecurity: AI will become extremely good at finding software vulnerabilities, and the world will discover its software is far more fragile than anyone imagined — it's just that human offensive capability was limited. Even if every commercial model provider blocks malicious use, open-source models will soon have equivalent coding capabilities. The only way out is to get these tools into defenders' hands first — using AI to harden power plant systems running "code nobody's touched in 20 years."
The same logic applies to biosecurity. "Someone, at some point, will use some model to develop a pathogen," Altman said bluntly. What the world needs is detection systems, rapid-response therapeutics, and layered defenses — not the hope of permanently locking down model capabilities.
Food Supply Chains: An Overlooked Biosecurity Blind Spot
Josh Achiam — OpenAI's chief futurist — spoke at the forum with near-evangelical fervor about a topic he says he raises "every chance I get": biological risks in the food supply chain. He believes people drastically underestimate the fragility here, and that AI could make large-scale hardening of food supply chains economically viable — something previously too costly to even attempt.
This fits his broader view on resilience: many of the new threats AI introduces are, at their core, amplifications of vulnerabilities that already existed. COVID exposed everyone's deep dependence on supply chains; AI simply raises the urgency to act.
The Era of Two or Three People Plus a Stack of GPUs
Altman recalled a previous moment when startup barriers collapsed: the arrival of AWS, which freed small teams from managing racks and server rooms. "That shift was already huge, but the one coming is far bigger."
What he wants to explore is a new paradigm — two or three people with massive GPU access running an entire company, with AI handling every function the founders can't. Josh put it more bluntly: if you have a startup idea, an AI team covering every area where you have zero experience makes getting off the ground dramatically easier.
Altman admitted he doesn't yet know what this will look like in practice, but "every instinct I have tells me there's something deep and important here that needs to be figured out."
Two Layers of "Democratization"
Altman distinguished two dimensions of AI democratization: first, shared access — ensuring everyone can use sufficiently good AI; second, having a voice in AI's direction. Shipping products gives people firsthand experience; publishing documents like the blueprint gives them a basis for discussion — but discussion alone isn't enough. There need to be mechanisms that actually channel public input back into the system.
On the access side, his logic borders on obsession: if compute is scarce, the wealthiest people and companies will bid prices up to extreme levels, and AI will become yet another monopolized scarce resource. The only credible long-term democratization strategy is to build massive infrastructure and drive AI costs down. He drew an analogy to electricity — over the past 200 years, dramatic drops in energy prices have been among the most powerful forces for raising living standards worldwide. AI needs to follow the same path.
Tax Reform and the 32-Hour Work Week
Adrien steered the conversation in a sharper direction: when AI handles most intellectual labor, the economy tilts toward capital — what happens to ordinary people? The blueprint proposes several directions: modernizing the tax base, portable benefits decoupled from employers, and a conditional 32-hour work week.
He specifically emphasized the "countercyclical" framing: these policies aren't meant to be rolled out immediately, but triggered when AI actually causes large-scale disruption. In today's world, some of these measures might do more harm than good — they're a toolkit designed for a significantly different future.
Altman went further: capitalism depends on a certain balance between labor and capital. If that balance is fundamentally broken, the existing system will have to evolve. Exactly how remains an open question. He left room for uncertainty — "maybe we're wrong, maybe no changes are needed at all" — but while there's still time to think and debate, better to put the ideas out there.
Giving Workers a Seat at the AI Deployment Table
When the discussion turned to worker participation, Josh first acknowledged the "elephant in the room": many workers are terrified of AI. They're not excitedly thinking about "how to use AI at work" — they're wondering "will AI replace me."
He argued the right sequence is: first, put out documents like the blueprint that clearly articulate how you'll advocate for fair economic policy and safety nets. Build trust. Then talk about empowering unions to make informed decisions about AI adoption, and involving workers in decisions about workplace AI monitoring. At the same time, push hard on AI literacy education so people can actually use AI to improve their own lives.
The "Personal Augmentation" of Healthcare Has Already Begun
Altman shared a small personal story: he recently got blood work done — hundreds of markers, a few slightly out of range. He asked his doctor, who said "probably all fine." He uploaded the report to ChatGPT and got back: "You're fine, but these specific markers are off for this reason, take this supplement, recheck in a month." He followed the advice. Problem solved.
"I wasn't seriously ill, but being able to upload a blood test and instantly get the right answer — to a pretty complex question — that experience was incredible."
Josh described the same dynamic from a systems perspective: too many people can't navigate the healthcare system, don't know which specialist to see, get lost in insurance workflows, and go years without a diagnosis. AI won't replace doctors, but it will make doctors' workloads manageable and give patients access to high-quality care at scale.
The Programmer Parents Watching Their Kid Build Games with Codex
Altman said that among all the "aha moments" he's witnessed, his favorite is this: programmer parents watching their child use Codex for the first time. The kid's head is bursting with ideas, completely unaware of what's traditionally hard or easy, and just describes a video game out loud. Codex builds it. The child directs the whole thing by talking, on a purely creative journey.
The parents stand there — first thinking "there's no way this works," then it works, then "my child is going to grow up in a world where this capability is taken for granted." Altman said he himself would never have thought to try it, because he was too certain it couldn't be done.
That led to the next thing he wants to build: a model that helps you come up with good ideas. "Look at all your texts, emails, everything on your computer, find the scattered fragments of ideas you've mentioned in passing, and surface them. Then I'll go build them."
March 2028: The Automated Researcher Countdown
Adrien mentioned a specific milestone — OpenAI's goal is to build an "automated researcher" by March 2028: an AI system capable of independently conducting AI research. Altman corrected Adrien's vague "end of 2028" from the side: "March."
Adrien explained why this milestone is uniquely significant: once you have an automated researcher capable of doing AI research, the impact is twofold — it proves AI can handle advanced cognitive work, and it accelerates all subsequent AI progress. The year following that milestone will almost certainly see faster advancement than anything before it.
This is also the deeper reason the blueprint was published now: the window for society to adapt and debate may be shorter than most people assume.
